LKMCECC decries violence in Tuli

Asserts to continue effort to ensure clean election

Mokokchung, September 23 (MExN): The Langpangkong Students’ Conference (LKM) has condemned the act of some persons who it said used cash, arms and ammunition, violence and stored cache of explosives resulting in damage to properties on September 19 in Tuli. The act, the students’ body stated, is in complete contradiction of the principles and commitment of Clean Election Campaign.

“This despicable act of our own people brought us a big shame despite our laborious effort to ensure fair and free election. Nevertheless, this incident made us more responsible and determined to face the challenges of Clean Election,” stated a press release from LKM Clean Election Campaign Committee (LKMCECC).

“This kind of unpleasant situation would have easily been avoided had the people responsible in the area not indulged themselves in such kind of selfish and thoughtless activities with an ill intention to contest or influence the people in electoral politics,” it added.

Aftermath of the Tuli incident that took place on September 18 and 19 respectively, LKMCECC in the presence of Langpangkong Tzükong Mongdang (parent body in the range) and LKM leaders had a meeting with Merangkong Village Council members along with their youth leaders on September 21 at Merangkong village. The meeting seriously deliberated on the “illegal activities of using arms and ammunition and violence that caused several damages to properties in Tuli,” and condemned “such irresponsible action which discourages the movement of clean election in Nagaland,” the release stated.

The LKMCECC encouraged people to recommit themselves for the better cause of younger generation. The members present in the meeting also resolved to recommit to the principle of clean election spearheaded by the church and the LKMCECC in particular.

“The purpose of clean election movement is not only to benefit voters but it also seriously attempts to benefit candidates as the message of clean election helps candidates to contest election without spending money,” it added. The LKMCECC appealed to all the intending candidates not to entice voters with cash or in kind rather share one’s own dreams and vision for the people and try to win the hearts of the people.

It further appealed to the general public to be strong enough in understanding one’s own political rights and resist the electoral temptations for the sake of future generations. The LKMCECC asserted it will continue its effort of consultation with all concerned to ensure clean election.
