Local products daily market opens in Dimapur

Principal Secretary, Horticulture, MK Mero on Tuesday inaugurated ‘Local Products Daily Market’ at Super Market, Dimapur near Bus stand.


The daily market, the location falling under Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN) which granted the permission for the purpose, will serve the needs of both local farmers and buyers. The daily market is being run under the aegis of Farmer Producer’s Organizations (FPO) Dimapur District.


Speaking at the programme, Mero said that the Horticulture department was focusing on marketing local produces and exploring linkages as well as for export. He stressed on the need to have fruit and vegetable wholesale market in Dimapur and that the department was also trying to work on it. Mero announced that the department would construct a cold storage room in the vicinity of the daily market so that farmers can store their produces for a longer period.


He also suggested that the appropriate authorities regulate prices of various produces at the daily market keeping in mind the profit of farmers as well as the interest of the buyers.


Director of Horticulture, Dr. RE Lotha who also spoke at the programme appreciated the DAN for providing a space where local farmers can sell their produces. He appealed the consumers to opt for locally produced organic vegetable instead of imported vegetables from outside the state.


DAN Chairman, Nyamnyei Konyak also spoke on the occasion.


Speaking to this newspaper, Senior Executive Officer DAN, Noleto Visa said that the DAN had granted permission for the daily market with the main objective of letting the local farmers reap benefits as well as for the consumers to get organic produces, “It is a win-win situation for both buyers and sellers,” he added.


Awards sponsored by Bharatiya Farmers Agro Business Development Co-Operative Ltd (A multi-state co-operative society) were also distributed during the programme.
