Lotha Ekhae Ekhung Shillong celebrates Golden Jubilee

Dimapur, September 22 (MExN): Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton graced the Golden Jubilee celebration of Lotha Ekhae Ekhung Shillong (LEES) as special invitee at the Naga Community Hall, Nagaland House Shillong on September 22.

Speaking at the programme, Patton urged the students in Shillong to be ambassadors for the Naga people and the state. “Be ambassadors of Nagaland by exhibiting the positive side of the Nagas” he said. If your behavior sends out negative vibes, then you are destroying the image of Naga people, but if you show the positive side of you and the true characteristics as handed down to us through generations, then you are building the image of Nagaland, Patton further added.

Recalling with nostalgia his Shillong days in the 1970s when he also served as the President of LEES, he said that students were more sincere and hardworking before the onset on technology since as they had nothing to distract them. But today, along with a boon, owing to its misuse, the technology has also given chance to various anti-social elements. Students spend most of their time in social media and games, a Media Cell release from the Deputy CMO, Shillong stated.

“Technology has an advantage for those who know the limits of when and how to utilise it but a huge disadvantage for those who do not know the limits of utilising it” he said.

He compared to earlier days when they had to rely on classroom lectures and library for studies with the students having internet today where almost all study materials are readily available.

Even the way education is imparted to students have been improved upon a lot and standardized with more relevant syllabi coupled with state-of-the-art infrastructure, he added.

Patton said today’s generation are fortunate to be enjoying all such benefits and facilities and yet if they do not do better in studies than those who studied during difficult times, then they are lacking in responsibilities and duties as a student.

He advised them to be more studious, hardworking, determined and most important of all fear the Lord. “No matter how much smart you are, without the help of God, you will not be able to scale greater heights” he said.

He encourages and challenged the students’ community by announcing a cash prize for those students who cracks UPSC and NPSC examination during his ministership.

Patton also talked about the unemployment problem and said that government cannot give jobs to every graduate and encouraged taking up vocational skills and exploring avenues in the private sector.
