Loyem Memorial: Ngangpong FC, Sangzi FC advance to semis

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 3 (MExN): Defending champions Ngangpong FC handed a 5-0 thrashing to the 40th Assam Rifles today at the local ground, Tuensang to sail into the semi-finals of the 25th Loyem Memorial Senior Open Championship (LMSSOC).

Bashang was the first to strike opening the floodgates in the 12th minute. Menem and Chingmak followed it up with the second and third in the 20th and 36th minute respectively to go into the break leading 3-0. A second half brace from Awangbo, the goals coming in the 64th and 75th, took the tally to 5-0. Awangbo was given a yellow card cautioning.

The other quarter-finals encounter was a thriller with Sangzi FC snatching a 2-1 victory over Donching Yangmei FC in extra time. The match was deadlocked 1-1 at the end of the regulation 90 minutes.

Sangzi was the first to strike in the 25th minute through Johnny but the celebration was dampened later on when Kundu missed a penalty kick. Donching custodian Yanger ensured his team put up a good fight deflecting Kundu’s shot as well as making several spectacular saves.

The match almost looked set for a 1-0 win for Sangzi but Donching’s Mun produced a shocker of a goal in added time (90+) to send the match into extra time 1-1. Sangzi recovered well from the shocker to score the winning goal 5 minutes into the first half of extra time. Salu was the scorer.

Lungchanlung of Donching Yangmei FC B, Johnny, Kundu and Steven of Sangzi FC received yellow card cautionings.
