Maintain strict discipline, Kronu urges sportspersons

Chokri area 49th sports meet 2019 underway

The 49th games and sports meet 2019 of Chokri Area Games & Sports Association (CAGSA) made a colouful start here today at Khulazu Basa under Phek district.


Gracing the inaugural function as special guest, minister for planning & co-ordination and land revenue Neiba Kronu encouraged the youth to take sports as a profession.


He maintained that sportspersons are the most respected group in the world.


He said the sportspersons are honoured and respected highly for their professionalism in western countries but observed that Nagas need further improvement.


“You have to strive further. Our perspective towards sports is too casual," Kronu said and asked the youth to be committed and stay focus on whatever they are good at.


The minister also advised the sportspersons to maintain proper diet in order to keep themselves fit and healthy and at the same time asked them to be humble and never feel proud with their achievements.


He said self righteous will take them nowhere in their career.


Reminding them that there is no shortcut to success, Kronu called upon the sportspersons to maintain strict discipline and follow the rules and regulations in order to shine in their respective fields.


CAGSA president Vetazo Tetseo in his presidential address said the sports meet aimed to produce young sportspersons and nourish their talents and take them forward at the national and international arena.


He called upon the youth to make the best use of the platform and excel in the field of games and sports.


He also acknowledged Hunezo Thisa, a recipient of Dr. T Ao Award and the acclaimed Naga style wrestler Venüzo Dawhuo, both belonging to Chokri area.


Earlier, Khulazu Basa village council chairman Vechohü Chüzho delivered welcome address while Naga Idol finalist Shenieta Churha presented special song.


CAGSA games & sports secretary Veprasuyo Vero administered oath to the participating teams.


This year, CAGSA has introduced the discipline of archery.


Ehuve Rose of Thipuzu took the first gold medal in archery (men’s category). In women’s category, Lotsulu Sazo of Phusachodu won Gold medal.


Further, in commemoration of CAGSA 49th sports meet, the department of India Post also launched CAGSA 'special cover' envelope.


The week long meet will be marked by football, volleyball, basketball, archery and field & track events.


783 athletics including coaches from Thipuzu, Phusachodu, Rukizu, Khalazu Bawe, Khulazu Basa, Kikruma village, Chesezu, Thenyizu, North Kikruma and Chetheba Town are taking part in this sports meet.


Dr.Veluo Shijo, additional director, State Institute of Rural Development (SIRD) Nagaland will grace the closing function on January 12.
