Making Aadhaar mandatory is inappropriate: NGBF

Dimapur, September 19 (MExN): The Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF) today maintained that making Aadhaar mandatory in every official work is “inappropriate and a hasty decision.” In a statement, it stated there are “undeniable problems prevailing in the Naga society as of now to make any things enforcing.” Expressing surprise to learn that some other states are not making Aadhaar mandatory, the GB Federation stated, under Article 371 (A), “we have a better position to deny any law or imposition which we envision as unbeneficial for the Nagas.” The NGBF was also dismayed over the government order to link Aadhaar with BPL cards in such a short period of time not realizing the infrastructure, shortcomings especially in rural areas.

“Making the people panicky, running around for Aadhaar wherein the proceeds of seeking intricate credentials like indigenous certificate is very tedious. Not to forget the fact that the people living in rural areas still don’t know what Aadhaar is, and is wary of it being made,” it noted. In this light, the NGBF appealed to the government to not enforce linking of Aadhaar with BPL cards as it would lead to the majority of the BPL holders being denied of their benefits. “And if it becomes absolutely necessary, we appeal to the govt. to extend the time period wherein we can reach out to as many beneficiaries as possible,” the federation added.
