Man gets 20 years rigorous imprisonment for raping minor

Kohima, January 15 (MExN): A special POCSO court in Kohima, on January 13, has sentenced a man, aged about 70-years, to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for rape of a minor girl.


The Special Judge, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Kohima, Khesheli Chishi also ordered for payment of Rs 1 lakh to the victim as compensation under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme.


According to a press release from the Special Public Prosecutor Kohima, Kathu Rengma, the accused, Vizielie Peseyie had raped the victim, aged about 11 years old, on several occasions before he was caught red handed on September 9.


The FIR of the case, alleging the same, was filed by the President and Secretary of Jotsoma Women Organization before the Officer-in-Charge, Kohima Women Police Station on September 12, 2018, it informed. 


On the basis of the FIR, an instant case was registered and UBSI S Yawao took up the investigation of the case, it added.  


After thorough investigation and on establishing prima facie case, the investigating Officer submitted charge sheet against the accused person, the release further informed. 


To prove the case, the prosecution examined 9 prosecution witnesses during trial.


“After hearing the argument advanced by the Special Public Prosecutor as well as the Defense counsel and taking into consideration the material evidence on record,” the Special Judge found accused Peseyie guilty of the offence of rape of a minor child under U/S. 376AB IPC, the release said. 


Accordingly he was convicted and sentenced to jail custody for 20 years, it added.
