A 28-year old man was left in a critical state after being trampled by an elephant near the village of Depa Garat under Dainadubi outpost in North Garo Hills.
As per reports received, the incident took place at about 8:30 on Sunday night when the victim along with a few others, were chasing the elephants when the animals came close to the jungle near their village. During the chase, the victim, Pangsrang G Momin came too close to one of them and was trampled upon and in severe pain.
The victim was immediately rushed to the Wageasi PHC from where he was sent to a hospital in Goalpara for initial medical before he was referred to GNC in Guwahati.
“He is currently recovering from the injury received during the encounter,” said superintendent of police, NGH, Abraham T Sangma.
The current incident is the fourth such man – elephant encounter to take place in the last one month. The encounters have left a resident of Salpara under Mendipathar PS dead while there have been tremendous amounts of property destroyed.
The first recorded attack was at Chilpara under Kharkutta PS before the herd moved near the village of Khardang, close to the Assam border and then to Salpara where a 57 year old farmer was killed earlier this month.
District officials stated that the Wildlife department has been informed of the continued menace and a temporary camp was likely to be set up soon to look into the pachyderm menace. However, there was no confirmation on when the same was to be taken up.
