Manipur to encourage use of handloom products

Newmai News Network Imphal | September 23   Manipur government is planning to encourage the people to use handloom products of the State. This move is to give a major boost to the state economy.   On Friday, Manipur Industries minister Govindas Konthoujam announced that people of the state would be encouraged to use indigenous handloom garments in both government and private establishments including all educational institutes.   Govindas Konthoujam on Friday flagged off a team carrying handloom and handicraft articles for selling in New Delhi and Kolkata. He thanked Panthoibi Emporium, New Delhi and Panthoibi Emporium, Kolkata for demanding the Manipur products worth around Rs 15 lakh from Manipur Handloom & Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd located at Paona Bazaar, Imphal.   Manipur is known for its handloom and handicraft products which are restricted to fine artistic value and incorporation of design and new ideas.   Govindas said steps will be taken to send these state products to outside states for every two-three months and that will help boost the state economy. He announced that the people of the state would be encouraged to wear handloom clothes.   The Manipur Industries minister said the Centre has approved setting up of training and skill development facilities for handloom and handicrafts in every districts of the state.   “For this, infrastructure will be developed at 10 centres in the first phase and another 10 in the second and final phase. Rs 2 crore will be spent for each centre. So, we're expecting a total of Rs 20 crore for this purpose,” Govindas said.
