Manipur government has decided to approach the Centre for replacement of Assam Rifles from manning the check posts on the national highways in Manipur with the state police.

The decision of the state government came close on the heel of a recent controversy over the alleged misbehaving by a rifleman of the Assam Rifles on duty at Khudengthabi check post along Imphal-Moreh road. It was taken up at a cabinet meeting convened by chief minister N Biren Singh on Friday evening.

“The State cabinet has approved a proposal of the state Home department regarding replacement of Assam Rifles by state police force on check posts,” said state Education minister Dr Th Radheshyam who is also the government spokesperson.

Addressing a press conference at his office chamber, the spokesperson said that if additional manpower is required in manning the check posts, CRPF personnel will be used.
