Manipur: Impasse over impasse Sports University resolved

Newmai News Network Imphal | June 6   The impasse over the National Sports University (NSU) has been resolved after a meeting was held between the agitating Democratic Student Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) and the State Government of Manipur.   DESAM has been agitating in the past few days in Imphal accusing the Central and the State Governments of establishing the National Sports University in Imphal only for "namesake."   The student body alleged that there is total lack of basic amenities even after four years of declaration of the opening of the varsity. DESAM also protested against the plan of the government to conduct the walk-in interviews for faculty positions of the National Sports University at Lucknow.   After today’s meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between DESAM and the State government at the Chief Minister’s office.   According to the MoU, the proposed walk-interviews at Lucknow has been “called off”.   The State Government and DESAM also agreed that in future any “concern or issues shall be brought to the State Government for peaceful resolution and the State government would attempt their resolution by involving all stakeholders by approaching Central Government”.   The MoU also said that the State Government assured of due examination of “reasonableness of all issues” raised by DESAM and active follow up on such issues regarding National Sports University. “Any further issues shall be resolved only by peaceful means,” the MoU further mentioned.   In today’s talk the State Government has also agreed to release all the DESAM leaders by tomorrow morning (June 7) without conditions. Many DESAM leaders have been detained in the police custody for the alleged creation of law and order problem in the past few days.
