Manipur University Row: VC rejects leave extension order

Newmai News Network Imphal | September 4   Prof AP Pandey, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University has undermined the leave order issued by the Manipur University which was signed by the Registrar in-charge making it a possibility of another phase of impasse in Manipur University within a couple of days’ time.   Talking to media persons in his quarters in Imphal on September 4, Prof AP Pandey said that he cannot accept his leave extension order that came from some authority below his authority. Driving home his point, Prof AP Pandey said that after the completion of his leave of 30 days, he had joined his office. He added that since he had joined the office as Vice Chancellor no order from anyone in the university is valid which is issued without his knowledge. Prof AP Pandey also said that on the completion of the 30-day leave he had to join the office to avoid disciplinary action against him.   However, an order from the Manipur University signed by Sh. Dorendrajit Singh, Registrar in-charge of the University, said yesterday that the “leave of the Vice Chancellor has been extended with effect from September 1 until completion of the inquiry proceedings” against the later “and until necessary follow up action is taken on the inquiry report by the competent authority”.   Meanwhile, sources said that the three organizations---Manipur University Students Union (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA)---are still with their stand that if the "competent authority" fails to take action against Prof AP Pandey by September 4 they will resume their agitation. Sources said that the three organizations are holding meetings on the latest development till the filing of this story.
