MANIPUR: Won’t remain a mute spectator, asserts ESU

Senapati, September 21 (MExN): The Makhan (Ekhramei) Student's Union (ESU) today condemned  and accused the Northern Maram People Organization (erstwhile Maram Khullen Circle Board) of allegedly "setting ablaze 18 houses in the wee hours of September 17."

Publicity Wing, ESU in a press release stated the arson has brought immense desolation and torment to the victims now rendered homeless and hopeless.

It further flayed the miscreants, whom it stated, didn’t even "spare the young children and students."

The ESU also wondered how a "civil organization could be in possession of automatic weapons" and also expressed shock that the firing took place barely 500 metre away from the nearest post of 34th Assam Rifle and accused them of "lackadaisical attitude of the troops in failing to safeguard the public."

The Union asked the 34th AR to "co-operate and provide access to necessary CCTV footage to enable the law enforcing agencies to identify vehicles and miscreants involved and nab them at the earliest."

It further demanded honest clarification from the officials employed at Sub-power Station, Maram Bazaar as to why the electricity power supply to Makhan Khuman, New Makhan, Makhan Lovadziingho, Chowainamei Khullen, Chowainamei Khunou, Emeipfiithu and Maopundung were  allegedly shut down for 3-4 days prior to the incident.

The Union will not tolerate any employee “found indulging in malicious activities in aiding the miscreants," it said.

The students’ body further condemned the aftermath on September 19, “as if that was not enough.” Such act do not harm the “innocent Makhan villagers alone but also threatens the life of thousands of students,” who are pursuing their education in Don Bosco College, Maram, the release added.

ESU also urged all the right thinking student bodies to condemn the act, it said, adding that it was not the first time the NMPO was "committing such act in the district."

It questioned its sensibility to resort to “such cowardly, dastardly act when there are ample ways for proper dialogue to bring about amicable solution as matured organizations.”

The Union, meanwhile, urged the NMPO to stop providing misleading information in the media and false claim of ancestral land “without any ounce of evidence.”

Asserting that it “won’t remain a mute spectator at the aggressive activities and creating concocted stories each day,” the Union said it “will leave no stone unturned to protect and safeguard the rights of the people and see that justice is delivered.”

The ESU meanwhile, appealed to all the peace-loving citizens to help, contribute and support the poor, affected victims of Makhan villagers to rebuild their houses and restart their normal activities.
