The Ministers’ Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School (MHBHSS) Kohima celebrated its golden jubilee here with Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker Er Vikho-o Yhoshu as resource person on April 20. The Ministers’ Hill Baptist English School (MHBES) was established on February 20, 1968. After upgrading the school to higher secondary its name has been changed from MHBES to MHBHSS in 1999.

‘Be persistent and determined’

Speaking on the occasion, Er Yhoshu said that persistence and determination are the two most important virtues in the world. “To achieve a goal in life, to succeed in the pursuits we undertake, we need persistence,” he said and encouraged the students to be persistent and determined. “Let us work hard for our education and use our talents persistently and with determination, till we achieve our dreams. In being persistent and determined, let us not forget to consider each other and respect each other,” he said.

Congratulating MHBHSS, the NLA Speaker conveyed his hope and prayer that “God will enable all of you to continue to strive towards excellence, always full of persistence and determination.” Later, he released a souvenir, marking the 50 years journey of MHBHSS Kohima.

‘Education is not examination alone’

Nagaland Board of School Education, Chairman, Asano Sekhose said that education is not examination alone. Calling the teachers to focus on the overall development of the child,” she said, “We all need to march in this direction so that by doing so, we bring about a cultural change in the schools.”

She made a clarion call to all teachers to rededicate themselves and work with renewed commitment.

“Take your job/profession as a mission- a mission to bring about change. Teaching, if done with the help of technology, I believe the learning process will be joyful one. As teachers we need to keep ourselves updated with required information and give our best to the children,” she said. As teachers, Sekhose said, “we need to take care of not only the cognitive abilities of the child but also their affective and psychomotor abilities/skills of the children if we are to make them, a socially acceptable citizen of tomorrow.”

Referring to MHBHSS attaining 50 glorious years, Sekhose said the MHBHSS has grown into a big family imparting much needed education and has gained recognition and trust from the students and parents alike.

“You need to develop other skills such as work skills, problem solving skills, social skills, communication skills if you are to be successful in life. Your efforts as a student must yield good results so that tomorrow, you can contribute to the growth of the society,” Sekhose said to the students.

She said success in life will depend on how the child is encouraged and empowered with skills and knowledge, adding that abilities, attitudes of the child should be nurtured in the right direction so that he can become a socially responsible person.

She said it is crucial for teachers, parents and stakeholders to work together to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which the abilities of students are developed. “Let us all join hand to fulfill the aim of education i.e. to make our children socially, emotionally and physically sound who can create a society where we can all live together in peace,” Sekhose said.

Earlier, Rev. Dr. Atsi Dolie, executive director Angami Baptist Church Council delivered jubilee message. Visutha Ltu, chairman MHBHSS, Asenla Temsu, principal Chandmari HSS and Keviseto principal Baptist High Kohima also spoke on the occasion.
