The Mizo National Front (MNF) led Mizoram government on Thursday extended "dry day" period till March 10, an official release said.

Earlier, the state government had declared dry day period from December 21, 2018 to January 14, 2019 as part of a measure to impose prohibition in the state and to have "peaceful" celebrations of Christmas and New Year.

The cabinet meeting held under the leadership of Chief Minister Zoramthanga decided that the period be extended from January 15 to March 10 in view of Republic Day and Chapchar Kut (festival) and to enable the people to celebrate the occasion under peaceful atmosphere, the release added.

The MNF had made a poll promise of re-imposing total prohibition in the state if it comes to power. As a step towards fulfilling its pre-poll promises it has also banned sale of alcohol by government agencies since December 18 last year.

There were nine liquor shops run by government agencies in the state. Apart from closing down all nine, it also closed down all liquor houses.
