A Special Operation Team of Mokokchung Police on Thursday at around 2:30 pm intercepted a truck laden with LPG cylinders at Ari Junction, NH 2 under Longkhum village jurisdiction during a routine frisking exercise. The police on seeing some loose seal caps of the LPG cylinders suspected foul play and upon closer inspection found 70 new cylinder sealing caps and a hose lip used for siphoning off of gas from LPG cylinders.

In this connection, two persons have been arrested and a case has been registered against them at Police Station 2, Mokokchung and further investigation is on. According to police sources, the arrested duo has admitted to siphoning off of LPG from full cylinders to empty ones that were to be sold to public via LPG agencies. The two are also reported to have admitted siphoning off LPG fuel from more than 40 full cylinders to fill up five empty LPG cylinders. The truck was bound for Zunheboto from Dimapur.

Meanwhile, the Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry has in a statement appreciated the Mokokchung Police for arresting two individuals allegedly involved in siphoning of domestic LPG fuel on Thursday. MCCI also appealed for proper investigation in this case saying it was a matter of serious concern and that the identities of the culprits and their modus operandi be made public. MCCI also said that stringent action be taken against the culprits so as to act as deterrent for such perpetrators in the future.

“For long, the customers of LPG cylinders in Mokokchung have suspected foul play as the cylinders available in the market always seemed to weigh lighter than normal calibrated weight. It appears to us that a well-organized criminal syndicate is in operation here,” MCCI said. MCCI also requested customers and public in general to be vigilant and to report at the nearest police station if they have any information or clue in this regard.
