MTLT condemns rape

Mokokchung, June 1 (MExN): The Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) has stated it is “totally appalled” over the rape of a minor girl in Mon Town recently.

“The very act of violating a young 13 year old girl on not only one occasion but also on earlier two different occasions is totally infuriating, disgusting and downright inhuman,” MTLT asserted in a statement.

“Moreover, the audacity of the accused in threatening the victim ‘of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone’ is something to be taken quite seriously by the Naga society.”

It condemned the action of the accused and demanded the “most stringent of punishment” for him. The MTLT also stands in solidarity with all the right-thinking citizens and organizations of Nagaland in their demand for justice in a time bound manner, the statement added.

The MTLT reminded that rape is a non-bailable offence under Article 376 of the Indian Penal Code carrying a punishment of ‘rigorous imprisonment for life or not less than 7 years’. Therefore, it demanded the law enforcing agencies to expedite the case accordingly in the greater interest of justice.

Furthermore, the organization appealed to the Nagaland State Women Commission to take stock of the situation and rehabilitate the victim through appropriate government schemes and programmes.
