IMPHAL | October 22

Police on October 22 foiled protest demonstrations by students against infringing the interest of Manipur’s territorial integrity while settling the vexed Naga political issue.

Reports said that students of various colleges in Imphal and its outskirt assembled outside their respective college campuses to stage protest demonstrations under the aegis of newly formed Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI).

COCOMI was formed by a resolution of an "emergency public meeting" on the Naga peace talks hosted by United Committee Manipur (UCM) in Imphal on October 21 to campaign against any solution to the Naga political issue that may disintegrate or pave way for disintegration of Manipur.

The constituents of the COCOMI are AMUCO, CCSK, HERICOUN, LIPUL and UCM.

Under the aegis of COCOMI, students of Manipur College, Imphal College, DM College, Liberal College and Birmangol College assembled outside the college campuses to stage the protest. However, except the protest demonstration staged by the students of Manipur College, police stopped the rest from agitating.

Students of Manipur College formed a human chain on the road outside their college campus and shouted various slogans against any move to distort the territorial integrity of Manipur because of the final solution to the vexed Naga political issue.

Leaders of COCOMI who turned up at the protest sites shouted various slogans decrying any form of formation of territorial council, extension of 6th Schedule of Constitution of India and "ethnic based administrative arrangement" in the state.

“Long live Manipur”, “No disintegration of Manipur integrity”, “No ethnic based administrative arrangement in Manipur” etc were among other slogans shouted by the students during the protest.
