Naga Villages in Manipur to deliberate on issues

Senapati, October 11 (NNN): In a first of its kind, all Naga villages in Manipur will conglomerate at Tagaramphung village, also called Yaikongpao near Senapati district headquarters on October 19 to deliberate on the "historic Indo-Naga Framework Agreement, Land and Village Administration and political situations” that are confronting Nagas in the present state of Manipur.

Functionaries of village authorities from over 800 Naga villages in Manipur will participate in the event which has been christened as the First Conference of the Naga Village Authority of South Nagalim. The programme is being organised by the United Naga Council (UNC). Noted advocate from Manipur High Court, R Daniel will dwell on the topic, "Land and Village Administration." UNC President Gaidon Kamei informed Newmai News Network this evening that a programme such as this has become a matter of urgency as "our ancestral lands" have been exploited by the Manipur government in the name of development. "On the pretext of setting up of multipurpose projects the Manipur government has been exploiting our ancestral lands. If this is not checked in urgency we will be left with no lands," Gaidon Kamei said. The UNC president termed the Inner Line Permit related movement in the Manipur valley and the demand of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meiteis as "ploys to grab our ancestral lands."

Meanwhile, the UNC general secretary S Milan has appealed transporters to halt traffic along the National Highway-2 at Senapati headquarters section from 10 am till 2 pm on October 19.
