Nagaland Health Dept issues Zika advisory

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 15 (MExN): The Nagaland State Health and Family Welfare Department today issued an advisory cum general information regarding the Zika Virus Disease (ZVD).  

Three outbreaks of ZVD have been reported from India—January, 2017 Ahmedabad; February, 2017, Khrishnagiri, Tamilnadu; and the current ongoing outbreaks (September 2018) in Jaipur, Rajasthan.  

The state health department advised people to postpone or take extra precaution for travel to Rajasthan; especially Jaipur till the outbreak is contained.  

The department informed that high risk group includes persons with co-morbid conditions like diabetes, chronic respiratory illness, HT, immune disorders, people above 65 years and pregnant women.

ZVD is usually a relatively mild infection and requires no specific treatment, people sick with Zika virus should get plenty of fluids, rest and symptomatic treatment.  

Zika virus disease (ZVD) is an emerging viral disease transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, the same mosquito that transmits Dengue.  

The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947. Outbreaks of ZVD have been recorded in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific.  

ZVD presents as mild fever, rash, headache, body ache, joint pain and conjunctivitis occurring about 2-7 days after the bite of infected mosquito. Clinical manifestation is similar to Dengue.  

The department meanwhile informed that the recent Dengue outbreak, as of now is contained and confined to Dimapur district.  

“All vector control measures for ZVD are in place and is the same as for Dengue,” it informed, while adding that surveillance mechanism of various wings of the Health and Family Welfare Department is in place.
