301 top players from 11 districts including Nagaland Police have turned up at the 42nd Nagaland Inter District & State Open Badminton championship 2018, which got underway here today under the aegis of Nagaland Badminton Association (NBA) and Phek District Badminton Association (PDBA) as host.  

Gracing the inaugural function, Minister for Planning & Coordination and Land Revenue, Neiba Kronu maintained that Naga youth can excel in the field of badminton.  

He informed that badminton is dominated by South East Asian countries and Nagas can also shine in this field.  

Apart from competition arena, he said many use to play badminton for health purpose.  

No grant-in-aid for non performing sports associations

Youth Resources & Sports Advisor, Er Zale Neikha also maintained that Nagas have the potential to compete with others in the field of badminton.  

He advised the players to put more focus on the game and play with full dedication.  

He also informed that the government is contemplating to stop giving grant-in-aid to non performing sports associations in the state.  

He said that grant-in-aid is primarily designed to assist the concerned associations for holding and promotion of sports tournaments/activities and in no way to be used as pocket money or any other purpose.  

Er. Neikha also informed that the new sports policy is on the final stage. The cabinet will sit soon over it and approve the same accordingly.

NBA to get international standard 8 court indoor stadium

NBA senior vice president Dr. Watizulu Suzumeren said that NBA is one of the most active sports associations today in the state.  

The Association has been religiously conducting mega event in the form of Nagaland Inter District & State Open Badminton championship for the past 42 years.  

He said that NBA has and will be doing lot of round the year activities from now on.  

NBA has introduced under 11 & 9 years category for the first time in Nagaland from this year in preparation to produce badminton stars.  

It also hoped to start having ranking tournaments and different coaching programmes from this year.   He said the Association would also be coming up with its website for players details, activities etc.  

For the first time, it has introduced the tournament software.  

“We are also considering bringing an Indonesian coach on a trial basis during coaching camp for the North East Zonal National Badminton Championship to be held at Dimapur toward the first week of October,” he said adding that very soon, the NBA will get international standard 8 court indoor stadium at Dimapur and also working towards starting badminton academy.  

301 top players will compete in 11 categories, which will go on till August 12.
