Nagaland joins campaign to promote girl child rights

Dimapur, January 24 (MExN): As various states across India observed the National Girl Child Day to highlight and create awareness about the rights of girl child and to provide them with new opportunities, Nagaland also oragnised various activities and programme to mark the day. 

 


According to an AIR report, in Nagaland marking the occasion, week-long awareness campaigns such as rallies and signature campaigns are organized in towns and villages by the District Administration in collaboration with the Mahila Shakti Kendras, State Women and Child development department. 

 

 

Kohima: The State Resource Centre for Women, Mahila Shakti Kendra, Kohima in collaboration with Nagaland State Social Welfare Board organized a programme on account of the National Girl Child Week at the Bright Morning Star Children’s Home, Kohima on January 24.

 


The event was celebrated under the theme, ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Champions’ with the sole purpose to celebrate the girl child and ensure her safety and education. The programme emphasized on promoting awareness including the right of a girl child, the importance of education, health and nutrition.

 


The programme was chaired by Gracy Ayee, State Coordinator, SRCW. Invocation prayer was pronounced by Meneno V, Research Officer, SRCW and Daisy Mezhur, Secretary (NSSWB) & Mission Director (SRCW) spoke on the significance of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme and encouraged the girls to become ambassador of the girl child. 

 


A special song was presented by the Bright Morning Star Children’s Home. Aleno, Superintendent, Bright Morning Star Children’s Home, closed the formal programme with vote of thanks which was followed by lunch and games. 

 


 
Phek: A tree plantation on the theme ‘Save the Girl Child’ was held today at Phek town and simultaneously in all the four sub-divisions wherein 300 saplings was planted as part of the week long Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Special Campaign to commemorate the occasion of National Girl Child Day.

 


Tree plantation activity was organized by District administration and District Level Centre for Women-Mahila Shakti Kendra Phek.

 


N Bhavani Sri, (IAS), SDO (C) Phek delivered short speech before the plantation drive. She highlighted the importance of planting more trees and to ensure every girl child become a responsible citizen in saving our environment and making the world a better place for the future. Meanwhile, district level felicitation of the local champions is scheduled for January 26 at Phek Local Ground.

 

 

Noklak: Noklak Block celebrated National Girl Child Day at the KTC Hall Noklak. M Chaitanya Prasad, IAS Additional Deputy Commissioner Noklak, speaking to the girl students from various schools in Noklak, emphasized on the need to break down the system that prevent women from achieving their full potential and contributions to the growth of the nation, “deprivation of equal access to education health, human rights etc are the impediment to the progress of our society.” The programme was chaired by Yithachu Thur, EAC Noklak Hq.

 

National Girl Child Day in Bhandari

 

Wokha: The Wokha District Administration observed the National Girl Child day at the Town hall Bhandari on January 24.

 


Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhandari, Tiameren Chang, speaking as guest of honour, said that in today's time, besides fighting against exploitation and discrimination against women they also have big responsibilities to focus on their health care first and foremost because a family's health is so much dependent on a healthy mother and the future of a healthy society cannot be possible without taking care of the little girls today.

 


In his keynote speech, EAC Bhandari, Dr Riku Khutso stated that the main objective of the programme is to continue to support the girl child to live a violence and exploitation free life and to assert her rights for parity, for education and health care and to empower her to live a better life for herself, her family and the society at large. 

 


Baby girls born in the year 2020 were given gifts in the programme. Singing competition was also held amongst the colonies and the winners were given cash prizes besides consolation prizes to the participants.

 

 

Kiphire: The National Girl Child day was observed in five different blocks of Kiphire district that was organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan Kiphire in collaboration with Poshan Abhiyan Kiphire.

 


At Kiphire village, Itulangbe from Poshan Abhiyan spoke on Child’s rights and said that every child under the age of 14 should get access of free education and he challenges all the children to stand on their feet and to move forward for betterment of their society. 

 


NYK volunteer, Thripili Sangtam encouraged the children to take every opportunity in schools and Sunday schools in order to shine as they grow.  

 


Earlier, Arila Sangtam also spoke on women empowerment and stress on the importance of women’s right. She also highlighted on some points on women’s rights to the gathering.

 


On the sideline of the programme, walkathon race was conducted earlier this morning where Rebecca, Azila and Nito begged 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. Cash prize was handed over to the winner.

 

 

Peren: Peren District Administration in collaboration with District Level Centre for Women-Mahila Shakti Kendra organized felicitation programme for mother and girl child and sticker campaign at Community Health Centre and Anganwadi Centre, Jalukie town along with the ASHAs and AWWs under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao on January 23.

 


Interaction and discussion hour was followed by distribution of gift hampers. Meanwhile, as part of National Girl Child Week, a signature campaign in support of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao was held at DC Complex, District Headquarter New Peren.

 


Another function was held at Assam Rifle Public School (High), Jalukie on January 24. Major Suneel Tadi 2 IC 36 AR emphasized on the re-orientation of the parents and uphold the value of girls in the family. Welcome address was delivered by ARPS Principal, N Kiziuna and vote of thanks was proposed by CHILDLINE 1098 Peren Coordinator, Ibamsile. Other highlights of the event include special song, slide show and skit on the theme Beti Bachao Beti Padhao by ARPS students followed with signature campaign.

 


The official photo book and report of all activities conducted under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme in Peren district was released on January 24 at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, New Peren Hq. 

 


DC Peren, Sentiwapang Aier, NCS appreciated the assistance of all the line departments as well as civil society in Peren district in ensuring the important message of protecting and promoting girls in all aspects of life is disseminated to all the sections of society. 

 


District Welfare Officer Peren, Nokcharenla spoke on the challenges faced by the Mahila Shakti Kendra team during the implementation process and requested the DC to continue giving his whole hearted support.

 


The photo book containing pictures, articles and summary of all activities in the past six months was officially launched when the DWO Peren presented the report to the DC.

 


Sakhi-One Stop Centre Peren in collaboration with District Administration and Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK) Peren under BBBP organized sensitization programme for proprietors and children in orphanages and children's home at Christian Servanthood Ministry Orphanage Children's Home, Peren town on January 24.    

 


Caseworker OSC, Peheilusile Haisobe gave a brief introduction on the significance of Girl Child Week. While speaking, she emphasized on the importance of girl child and encouraged them to be confident for their rights and fight against all odds. She also stated every young woman have the rights or has the responsibility to dream big. 

 


Review session concerning Women helpline number 181 and CHILDLINE number 1098 was delivered by Counsellor OSC, Grace Newmai. The team donated rice and also provided light refreshments to all the inmates.
