Nagaland observes World Consumer Rights Day

Dimapur, March 15 (MExN): The World Consumer Rights Day was observed across Nagaland on March 15. The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection observed the World Consumer Right Day on March 15 at PTC Hall with Shanavas C. IAS, Deputy Commissioner Phek as the special guest.  

While delivering the keynote address, he highlighted about the significance of observing the World Consumer Right Day. The Guest speaker also emphasized that more attention should be given to local consumers and further urged all consumers to be more responsible in the days to come.  

The programme was attended by DBs, GBs, Colony Chairmen, Frontal Organizations, students and teachers from different schools of Phek Town.  

In Kohima, the Consumer Rights Day was observed at the Panchayat Hall, New Market area, with the theme “Making digital market places fairer”.  

The programme was organised by New Market area Panchayat and New Market Youth Organisation and sponsored by Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection Department, Kohima district. The aim of this year’s theme is to promote digital market places that are accessible, safer and fairer for consumers across the globe.  

Kezhokhoto Savi, President NVCO while addressing the gathering said that as a consumer one should be aware of their rights. Stating that consumers are the king of the market, Savi argued that without consumers, there will be no business.  

However, Savi cautioned the consumers that despite the benefits of the digital market, one needs to be aware of the scams and fraud which have become very common.  

He further appealed the Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection Department to do more and be more effective in creating awareness on consumer rights.  

Haikam Zeliang, Jt Controller LM&CP, in his short speech highlighted the activities of the department and exhorted the participants on the importance of Consumer Rights Day.  

The Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) also observed World Consumer Rights Day at Don Bosco School, Sechu Zubza, Kohima district.  

Delivering a presentation on consumer's rights and law as a profession, Zasitsolie Beio, Panel Lawyer NSLSA stated that a consumer is one who buys any goods and apprised that a complaint can be filed when an unfair or restrictive trade practice is practiced by trader or service provider.  

Beio further informed that a Consumer Dispute Redressal Machinery is present at the National Commission, State Commission and the District Forum.  

The time limit for filing compliant is within two years from the date of which the cause of action arises, he informed. But even if the time limit expires, a complaint can be taken up provided the complainant is able to satisfy the forum or commission about the reasonableness in the delay, he added.  

Speaking on the rights of a child, Hisinlo Himb, Panel Lawyer KDLSA explained the various children rights categories – Right to Survival, Right to Protection, Right to Participation and Right to Development. He also stressed on the various provisions for the protection and care of children provided in the Constitution of India as well as various acts enacted by the parliament.  

Altogether 111 students Classes 8 to 10 participated in the programme. Teachers and staffs of the school also attended the programme.
