Nagaland: Several crores approved for urban poor housing

Rs. 117.34 crore has already been approved to the Government of Nagaland under the sub-mission of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project, ‘Construction of Housing for the Urban Poor in Kohima town.’

This was stated in the Annual Administrative Report 2017-2018 of the Directorate of Municipal Affairs. According to the Report, the total number of dwelling units to be covered in this project equals to 3504 units. In the first phase, 1512 dwelling units were constructed in three locations in Kohima – K. Badze, Meriema and Rüliezou. In the second phase, the report cited an in-situ upgradation of 1992 dwelling units in Kohima.

Under the Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana, the Directorate is undertaking three projects on Housing and Infrastructure development. Rs. 1859.95 lakh was sanctioned for the construction of rental Housing for Urban poor in Chumukedima with 384 units where the report mentions that 50 percent has been completed.  For the construction of housing for urban poor at Tseminyu town, Rs. 1805.21 lakh has been sanctioned for 320 dwelling units where 65 percent of the construction has been completed. In Medziphema town, Rs. 1973.87 lakh was sanctioned for construction of 350 dwelling units for the urban poor.
