Since its inception, the Nagaland State GIS & Remote Sensing Centre has been providing full spectrum of innovative geospatial services and solutions, application software, geospatial data engineering and analytics services to facilitate all line departments, resource managers, planners and decision makers for sustainable development planning activities in the state of Nagaland.

A source said that Indian Space programme emphasizes on utilization of space technology for the betterment of the society. Towards realizing this objective, the centre is acting as nodal agency of the state of Nagaland for space technology applications such as Remote Sensing and GIS.

The Centre has now become a geospatial resource hub and the repository of various thematic layers; geospatial applications satellite imageries, most modern hardware and software (Image Processing, GIS, GPS/DGPS) installations in addition to a team of scientists and committed technical personnel.

The vision of the Centre is to develop state infrastructure for the availability of and access to organized Geo-Spatial Data, to develop techniques and methodology that could be helpful in alleviating the problems of the state, committed to provide benefits of Geospatial technology to common man, provide scientific inputs to various line departments and institutions of state using Geo-spatial technology in their programmes.

Its objectives are: to undertake, promote, guide, coordinate and aid research and development in the field of remote sensing, satellite communications & geospatial science, survey for monitoring and assessment of natural resources, to carry out spatial temporal surveys, surveillance using Geo-spatial technology, to develop an efficient data acquisition and retrieval system and to act as a repository of various natural resources data of the state, to act as nodal organization in the state, advising the user agencies and to disseminate the remote sensing & GIS technology at operational levels, to provide research and development support to the teaching and research organizations of the state in specified areas of geospatial technology, to organize training and capacity building programmes for advanced study and research in Geospatial technology and its applications, to cooperate and collaborate with other national and overseas institutions, and research in geo-spatial technologies and its applications.   The goal of the Centre is to create a platform where all stakeholders can cooperate and interact with each other with the relevant technologies in order to meet objectives at different political and administrative levels for perspective planning and development.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister TR Zeliang recently expressed happiness that Nagaland has also made much progress in various space technologies applications such as GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry and Location Based Services (LBS), state wide GIS & IT based projects in the field of health, education, disaster management, vehicle tracking, e-learning, 3D Terrain Modelling, natural resource and land use mappings, weather reports and forecasting etc, which are being done in collaboration with various national organizations
