Nagaland University’s (NU) position in the latest National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has slipped from 95th spot last year to 101-150 rank-band in 2019.

The fourth edition of India’s top university rankings was released by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind on April 8.
NU, which entered the top 200 bracket for the first time in 2018, however failed to maintain its earlier achievement.

The ranking list by Ministry for Human Resource Development (MHRD) assessed higher education institution in India on five board parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practices; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception.

Many educational institutions from North East featured prominently in the 2019 edition, including the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, which was ranked overall 9.

Other big movers include Tezpur University, Tezpur and North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, respectively ranked 29th and 39th in the University category.  Other universities from the region in the Top 100 were:  Gauhati University (42); Mizoram University, Aizawl (76); Dibrugarh University, (86); Assam University, Silchar (97) and Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar (99).

In ‘Engineering,’ apart from the IIT, Guwahati, three National Institute of Technology (NITs) featured in top 100 - NIT, Silchar (51); NIT, Agartala; and NIT, Shillong (67). NIT, Manipur and North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Itanagar were ranked at 148 and 173 respectively. However, NIT Nagaland failed to make the top 200 rank band.  The Institute of Management, Shillong was ranked 24th in the ‘Management' category.

Interestingly, in the ‘Colleges’ category, three institutions from the region featured in the  100-200 rank band. They are Pachhunga University College, Aizawl ; Dispur College, Kamrup; and  Sikkim Government College, Tadong.

Jubilant with the last year ranking, an NU official had then said that the university would strive to be ranked inside top 50 universities in the next ranking.

However, looking at 2019, the University has to work harder to achieve the target.

According to the MHRD, a total of 3127 unique institutions responded and offered themselves for ranking under “Overall”, category-specific or domain-specific ranking. In all, 4867 applications for ranking were made by these 3127 unique applicant institutions under various categories/domains.
