Dimapur, June 8 (MExN): National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson, Rekha Sharma arrived in the state of Nagaland on June 8 along with Neha Mahajan, Counselor, NCW.
National Commission for Women is inter alia mandated to inspect institutions where women are housed as prisoners under the provisions of NCW Act 1990. Keeping this mandate, the NCW visited the District Jail, Dimapur and interacted with the female inmates.
A press note stated that they were accompanied by the State team headed by the chairperson of Nagaland State Commission for Women, Dr. Temsula Ao, Social Welfare officials, NGO representatives from Sophia Foundation, advocate providing legal aid to female inmates etc.
This was followed by a meeting with the police officials headed by Renchamo P Kikon (IPS), DG (Prison), where challenges of the women prisoners and also women police personnel were deliberated.
The NCW chairperson is scheduled to meet the Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya on June 9.
