National Lok Adalat settles 69 cases in Nagaland

Kohima, December 9 (MExN): Eleven Lok Adalat (The People’s Court) sitting benches was constituted in all the eleven District Headquarters organised by the respective District Legal Services Authorities on December 9.  

A total of 355 cases were taken up for settlement, among which 69 cases, mostly at pre-litigative stage were disposed of. The total settlement amount involved in the disposed cases amounts to Rs. 76,09,585/- (Rupees seventy six lakh nine thousand five hundred eighty five) only.  

Cases referred for settlement were mostly on Bank recovery matters, Matters relating to Public Utility such as Telephone Bills & Rental, Criminal compoundable matters, etc with a significant number of cases being disposed. Today’s Lok Adalat also witnessed active participation by the officials of Banks, General Insurance companies, Public service providers and most importantly amenable appearance by the litigants.  

The Lok Adalat proceedings was a great success which was headed by a Presiding Judges accompanied by conciliators, Lawyers and also the Para legal Volunteers. Lok Adalat was held in various respective District Court Buildings. The proceedings were also conducted in local dialects for convenience of the illiterate litigants and also without stressing much on legal technicalities.  

Lok Adalat (The Peoples Court) is meant for amicable settlement of cases based on resolving disputes by methods of direct talks between the litigants or parties. The system of Lok Adalat is economical and here the justice delivery is quick and effective. The Lok Adalat mechanism works and is effective for dispute resolution with certain elements involved such as participation, fairness, expectations, voluntariness, neighborliness, transparency and lack of animosity.  

The National Lok Adalat is held bimonthly throughout the country and the respective State Legal Services Authorities serve as the implementing agency which are statutory bodies constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act 1987.
