National seminar on ‘Mental Health in the Workplace’ at NU concludes

Dimapur, October 11 (MExN): A two day National seminar was organized by the Department of Psychology, Nagaland University on October 10 and 11 to mark the World Mental Health Day 2017 with the theme ‘Mental Health in the Workplace.’  

Prof. Pardeshi Lal, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University graced the programme as the chief guest. Prof. Lal highlighted the magnificent role that the human brain plays in all aspects of an individual’s life and stressed on why one should maintain a healthy body in order to have a healthy mind.  

Prof. R.C. Gupta, Pro Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, who was present as the guest of honour, spoke about the bearing that mental ill health has on organizations across the globe while Prof. Buno Liegise, enlightened the gathering on the significance of World Mental Health Day.  

Prof. Indranee Phookan Borooah, Department of Psychology, Gauhati University, delivered the keynote address emphasizing on positive psychological constructs such as hope, resilience, optimism, and self efficacy that individual at work settings need to have in order to be flourishing as individuals.  

Prof. Borooah advocated PERMA (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Positive Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment) which if practiced correctly and acquired in good measure leads to well being. Bidita Das, Assistant Professor of Handique Girls College, Guwahati, spoke about the agents such as lack of autonomy and conflicts between colleagues that can lead to negative mental health among teachers.  

On the second day of the seminar, Dr. P. Ngully made presentation on mental illness in the workplace using case studies. He emphasized on eating brain healthy food and in training our brain to be a leader, inventor, teacher and user so as to live a mentally and emotionally healthy life. In the last academic session of the seminar, a stimulating presentation on the causes and management of stress at work settings was delivered by Dr. Ditalak Mpanme, Assistant Professor of Department of Management, Nagaland University.  

The valedictory session was graced by Prof. R.C.Gupta and Prof. Buno Liegise did the honours of giving away the certificates. The alumni of 2015-2017 batch of MA Psychology gifted an oil painting of Dr. Sigmund Freud (Father of Psychoanalysis) to the Department as a mark of commemorating the World Mental Health Day. Tsekhute Chirah of Third Semester MA Psychology received the first prize of the art competition held on the theme of the seminar.
