NBCC extends focus beyond church

Dimapur, February 10 (MExN): The 74th annual session of the Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NPCC) has concluded with strong affirmation to extend outreach into the non-traditional areas of HIV/AIDs, Climate Change, biodiversity and alcoholism. This direction is among a number of affirmations including using prayer as tool to strengthen the faith of believers, their families and their society.
The NBCC conducted its session at Rotomi Baptist Church February 4-6 under the theme “being rooted in the word of God”. According to the NBCC, the event witnessed the largest gathering of over 600 delegates representing various associations under NBCC.  The churches undertook a number of resolutions as ‘action plan’ envisaged for implementation in the churches.
The church reiterated the Total Liquor Prohibition Act of the Government of Nagaland, passed in 1989. The NBCC will continue to strive for stringent implementation of the Total Liquor Prohibition Act in all the district headquarters, NBCC stated, and reaffirmed imparting Christian values and biblical teachings to the people to abstain from any form of substance abuse. The NBCC has asked all the local churches to chart appropriate plans “to help alcoholics to abstain from alcoholism.”
The NBCC also assured to address “social issues such as peace and justice” and AIDs & HIV, through proper teaching of the word of God. The church also undertook “resolutions” pertaining to “eco-biodiversity.” The NBCC reaffirmed a resolution adopted during the 72nd annual session of the NBCC held in Ahthibung in 2009. “Baptist churches will initiate Climate Change and Eco-Biological friendly actions, sensitize on conservation of forest and preservation of wild life, and work closely with the community leaders and concerned departments for addressing the environmental alarm,” the NBCC stated.
The council resolved on ‘abstaining from using jungle meats during NBCC and churches gatherings and discourage churches from offering wild animals during its thanksgiving service.’ On faith, the NBCC said to implement “dawn prayer” in all the Baptist churches ‘with ringing of bell’ and ‘chain of prayer.’ All the Baptist churches in Nagaland are to participate in the yearlong ‘chain of prayer.’
Likewise, family prayers in all the homes are encouraged and initiating these prayers is on the father; town churches are to conduct evening services only after offices are closed. Again, all members of the Baptist family in Nagaland are to engage in Bible reading throughout the year; all the Churches in Nagaland are to engage in Bible study of the book of Acts and Romans.
