NCW lauds Nagaland for prison reforms

The National Commission for Women has lauded the Director General of Prisons, Government of Nagaland for taking “prompt action to improve facilities” in Nagaland jails, as per its recommendations. 

“In an effort to improve the condition of women inmates lodged in jails across India, the NCW regularly conducts inspections,” the commission posted on its official Twitter handle on January 3.

The reforms undertaken by the DG Prisons include setting up medical facilities in all jails as well as conducting awareness programme on AIDs (HIV) and tuberculosis in Central Jail, Dimapur. 

Besides legal aid to all inmates, it further noted that panel lawyers were ‘engaged and made available for providing legal consultations to women inmates.’ 

The Commission also highlighted that water filters were “installed in all jails to provide safe drinking water top all inmates” while ‘Education and Skills Development Programme’ were provided to all willing inmates.  

The DG (Prisons) initiatives of setting up mini library as well providing newspaper to inmates were also lauded by the NCW.
