Many educational institutions from North East featured prominently in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2019 released on April 8 by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
Institutions located in Assam lead the ranking with the premier Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati ranking 9th in the ‘Overall’ category, while taking number 7th position in ‘Engineering.’
Apart from IIT, Guwahati, the Tezpur University (TU) was ranked 48th overall followed by the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong at 62nd. The other university from NE in the top 100 was Gauhati University (GU) ranked at 65th.
In the ‘Universities’ category, TU moved up to 29, while NEHU climbed at 39. Other universities from the region in the Top 100 were: GU (42); Mizoram University (76); Dibrugarh University-DU (86); Assam University, Silchar (97) and Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar (99).
In ‘Engineering,’ apart from the IIT, Guwahati, 3 National Institute of Technology (NITs) featured in top 100 – NIT, Silchar (51); NIT, Agartala; and NIT, Shillong (67).
NIT, Manipur and North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology, Itanagar were ranked at 148th and 173rd respectively.
Among medical institutes, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal was ranked 28th. DU and Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, Guwahati were ranked 28th and 72nd respectively in ‘Pharmacy’ category. The Institute of Management, Shillong was ranked 24th in the ‘Management category.
Interestingly, in the ‘Colleges’ category, three institutes from the region featured in the 100-200 band. They are Pachhunga University College, Aizawl; Dispur College, Kamrup; and Sikkim Government College, Tadong.
Apart from this, the performances of Nagaland was below par, with Nagaland University ranked 95th last year falling, to 100-200 band, thereby was not ranked. NIT Nagaland also did not feature in the ranking list.
