NEDF wants SIT against NHPC, NEEPCO for wanton destruction in North East

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 12 (MExN): The North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) has urged the Government of India (GoI) to establish Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate against the NHPC Limited and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) for the alleged destruction caused to the environmental, social, economic, failure to conduct human rights impact assessment, failure in seeking free prior and informed consent of the people who have been affected and who are going to be affected directly and indirectly by the project initiated by the two companies in the region.

 

It also demanded the GoI to revoke all Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in the North East Development Submit, 2017 on November 21 between various companies and countries from Europe, Japan, South Korea, etc, for the mining of Oil, Uranium, Limestone and other natural resources found in the region.

 

These resolve were made during the NEDF meeting held on December 8, 2017 in Imphal, Manipur with a view “to reflect and organize the exercise on re-thinking alternative development perspective in the North East” and thereby address the serious concern on rights of the people on land, water, forest and environment in the crucial context of climate change.

 

According to a press statement from NEDF, the meeting was held with active participation from Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. The delegation at the meeting also voiced serious concern over other issues affecting the region and made a number of resolves.

 

The meeting resolved that the GoI should decommission the Ranganadi Hydro Power Project, Ithai Barrage of 105 MW Loktak Multipurpose Hydroelectric project, Damur Dam immediately. All MOUs signed to build dams all over the rivers of North East should be revoked.

 

Expressing concern with the impact of extraction of oil and oil spill in Nagaland and Tripura which has led to the destruction of large number of cultivable land and pollution in the environment in, further the oil and gas exploration efforts by Oil India Limited, Asian Oilfields etc without indigenous peoples consent in Manipur, the Forum has urged the GoI to stop all oil exploration across India’s North East.

 

It also stated that policies promoting dam building and oil exploration such as the North East India Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 and the Manipur Hydro Power Policy 2012 formed without the consent of the indigenous peoples of the region should be repealed.
