Need to upgrade professional skills highlighted

Kohima, June 25 (MExN): A one-day capacity building training programmer on soft/professionalism skills development for officers and staff of Chief Engineer organised by Water Resources Department, Kohima was on June 25.

Resource person for the training were Youth Net Team- Lezo Putsure Director; Training Manager, Nuneseno Chase; Training Consultant, Ebibeni. Youth Net, Director, Lezo Putsure highlighted that professional skills are career competencies that are not taught or acquired as part of the course work required to earn masters or PhD but it is a skill of leadership, mentoring, project management and conflict resolution and value added skills which are essential to any career. He said that, our behaviour or success comes by our attitude and by the way we deal different situation that comes our way.

Lezo further pointed that, almost every job requires some public speaking and it is where one need to be capable of speaking clearly and presenting information effectively. To be presentable to anyone or in public, one needs to have articulation, confidence, creating presentation slides, poise, projection, social skills, receiving criticism and feedback, he added.

According to a DIPR report, Chief Engineer, Er Tsuktinungsang, in his keynote address said that with our own basic skills and achievements in our careers everyone has come thus so far and we are all accordingly responsible in whatever work we do as public officers, henceforth besides our academic or qualifications we have, we need to specialize or upgrade our skills. He added that, upgrading skills does not only mean knowing exactly what work is all about but in life with certain consequences whether it be in excellence or performing a good or bad one, we need to focused on how to avoid these consequences and make it acceptable around you and with the people working around you.

He further pointed that as a government servant working in an atmosphere, where we have seniors working above us, we should be ready to honk our skills in communication, on how to communicate and where to communicate. Therefore, he encouraged the officers and staffs to avail these opportunity to enhance the capabilities on how to get job done in a very cordial way among the officers and colleagues and to the people.

During the training the officers and staffs were highlighted on the skills development of professionalism, time management, effective communication and emotional intelligence, body language, responding appropriately and effective functioning of team work.
