NERLP inaugurates Irrigation canal at Mhainamtsi village

Peren, July 25 (MExN): North East Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) has formed 1029 Self Help Groups (SHGs), 93 SHG Village Federation (SHGVF), and 79 CDG (Community Development Group) in Peren, out of which 56 CDPs (Community Development Plans) are in the process of implementation.   The concept of the CDP is to cater to the need of the villagers, improve their livelihood and have a positive impact on the natural resources of the villages, informed a press release from NERLP.   Mhainamtsi CDG has completed the CDP of renovation of the check dam and construction of concrete irrigation canal to their terrace fields.   Ringsanbo Zeliang, State Coordinator, NERLP Nagaland formally inaugurated the canal on July 22. In his short speech, he highlighted that the over 400 acres fallow lands due to lack of proper water in Peren district – considered the rice bowl of Nagaland – can be brought back to cultivation and increase the productivity of the district.   Further, these fields can be used to grow winter crops when water is made available all year round, he stated.   The total project cost was Rs. 12,47,500; it was executed by the community themselves. NERLP contributed Rs.10,00,000 and the community contributed Rs. 2,47,500 in terms of unskilled labour and locally available materials in the village, the release added.
