New Market FC looking to reclaim lost glory

Kohima, July 23 (MExN): One of the oldest football clubs in Kohima, New Market FC is rearing to reclaim lost glory in the upcoming Kohima Football League.   Also known as New Market XI, the community-based club will be showcasing the young talents of Kohima in the age group of 18 to 23. The club was formed in 1973 by the New Market Youth Organization (NMYO) but it wasn’t until 1977 that the club took part in a major tournament when it participated in the Sir CR Pawsey Trophy. Thereafter, New Market XI started participating in every major tournament in the state, particularly in Kohima.   Some of the tournaments participated by the club on regular basis are: Senior Soccer League (1980s), Royal Gold Cup (1988-2013, NSF Martyrs Memorial Trophy (1990’s till date) and Classic Cup (1995 till date).   The 40 year-old Club with the with the motto “Sauviter in Modo, Fortiter in re, Uno Animo” meaning “Gentle in manner, Faithful in deed with one mind” is considered one of the most successful clubs having won the prestigious Classic Cup twice emerging champions in 1995 and 1998.   New Market XI also claimed the runner–up title of the Sir CR Pawsey Trophy in 1982 – the last time the trophy was played – and the trophy still stands tall in the trophy cabinet of New Market Youth Organization (NMYO) office.   Besides participating in major tournaments, New Market Xl has also undertaken coaching camps even going to Meluri, Phek to coach young talents.
