A three-day long 23rd general conference of Nagaland Medical Students’ Association (NMSA) got underway here today at ATI Complex under the theme “Learn to serve humanity.”

Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Advisor Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire and Dr. Vikeyie Losou, Principal Director Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland graced the inaugural session as the special guests.

NMSA, president Dr. Lichumo Ezung in his presidential address said that the Association strongly felt that there should be post creation for both MBBS and BDS graduates and create a dental surgeon post in every PHC and district hospital.

The Association also prayed for increase in book grant. Ezung said they are getting Rs. 3000 book grant since the year 2011, however in the current times the prices of tomes of medical knowledge are a costly affair.

Ezung stated that it has been an immense source of happiness for young medicos and practicing doctors when the government had initiated and made headway into establishing a medical college in the state.

“With the project under the able hands of the National Health Project, we dream and hope of a quality medical education Centre for our people that will gain good repute within our state in particular, and North East in general,” said Ezung.

NMSA president also appealed to the authorities that Naga medical professionals be given priority when it comes to employment.

He also stated that the eligibility criteria of candidate be strictly implemented.

On provision of medical library, Ezung said “With the view to keep pace with the progressive advancements in medical science the NMSA strongly opines that at least one medical library should be established in the state.”
The Association also prayed for sponsorship of post graduates and higher studies.

The president stated that many talented Naga doctors have been selected for PG and higher studies through entrance exams without the state sponsorship.

“It is pathetic to learn that our state government is not in a position to sponsor such talents. We are also aware that in the past few years seats allotted to Nagaland sponsored candidates at RIMS, Imphal were surrendered or re-allotted to any other states. We pray that the government would reexamine the situation as a genuine and rectify it for the interest of the Naga medicos,” he said.

NMSA biennial magazine released

Dr. Kire released the biennial magazine of NMSA entitled “Asclepius.”

In the magazine, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio lauded that since its inception in 1965, NMSA has been working towards welfare of the students from Nagaland who are undergoing medical studies in different institutions all over the country.

“Nagaland will also soon join the Nation with its own medical college. The work of the state government and the health department is in full swing to make sure that the college will begin to run the first academic course from 2010-2021. All the stakeholders are working tirelessly to achieve the target,” health & family welfare minister S. Pangnyu Phom penned in the magazine.

NMSA general secretary Limatemsu Imsong stated that during the session 2017-2019, a total of 113 new members were registered, of which 92 were MBSSS and 21 were BDS students. At present, there are a total of 286 active members.
