73.34% voter turnout in repolling in Assam

GUWAHATI, APRIL 27 (PTI):
Altogether 73.34% polling was recorded during fresh polling in 15 polling stations today in Assam's Kokrajhar, Gauhati, Nowgong and Mangaldoi Lok Sabha constituencies, Election Commission sources said. The highest polling was recorded at Nowgong with 76.59% in two polling stations followed by Kokrajhar with 76.41% voting in nine polling stations, Mangaldoi with 72.05% in one station and Gauhati with 68.33% in three centres, EC sources said, adding, the repolling was ordered due to EVM malfunctioning. Rrepolling was held at five polling stations in Gossaigaon Assembly constituency and four under Kokrajhar (West) in Kokrajhar LS seat, two under Gauhati West and one under Dispur in Gauhati LS seat, one each under Raha (SC) and Barhampur in Nowgong LS seat, besides one under Mazbat Assembly segment in Mangaldoi LS seat, EC sources said.

Security measures stepped up for President's visit in Manipur

IMPHAL, APRIL 27 (PTI):
Security has been beefed up with central paramilitary forces and the state police combing various parts of Manipur capital complex in view of the proposed visit of President Pranab Mukherjee on April 29. Mukherjee would be the chief guest at the 14th convocation of Manipur University. Police sources said random checking of passers-by have been launched at various places around Kanchipur area, the location of the university, about five kilometre from capital complex to detect movement and infiltration of the militants. Six major militant outfits have called for a 12-hour general strike on April 29 and also for boycott of the visit of the President alleging that the people of Manipur were being tortured by Central forces in the name of dealing with insurgency.

KNLA ultras killed, arms found in Assam

DIPHU, APRIL 27 (PTI):
Two suspected insurgents of the underground Karbi National Liberation Army (KNLA) were killed in an encounter with police in Karbi Anglong district of Assam and arms recovered from them, police said on Saturday. A group of militants exchanged fire with police at a place north of Uttar Borbil outpost under Howraghat police station at 10.50 PM last night, they said here. Two unidentified cadre suffered bullet injuries in the encounter and were taken to the nearby Nazar Mini Primary Health Centre where doctors declared them brought dead, they said.
