NPMHR founding member Ahu Sakhrie passes away

Kohima, July 23 (MExN): The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) today expressed pain and shock at the sudden demise of Ahu Sakhrie on July 23. He was one of the founding members and 2nd Convenor of the NPMHR.

“Ahu was a brilliant human rights member actively involved in and committed towards upliftment of the Nagas all throughout his life,” stated a condolence message issued by Neingulo Krome, Secretary General, NPMHR. “He believed in protecting universal human dignity, rights and values.”

In the Naga struggle for self determination, defending the right to life and free speech and movement was the endeavour of the founding members of NPMHR, and Ahu was one among them who with his powerful oratory skills and dedication was a strong propagator of the Naga cause, the note stated.

It further said that his participation in various human rights rallies, workshops and seminars highlighting atrocities committed by the Indian Army will be highly regarded and always remembered. “His immense contribution during the most difficult times in the life of the Naga people will be forever etched in the history of the Naga movement for sovereignty.”

NPMHR prayed that God will grant solace and comfort to the bereaved family.

In a separate condolence note, NSCN (IM) remembered Ahu Sakhrie as one of the visionary leaders amongst Nagas. “True to his enthusiasm, he was truthful and committed social worker. A down to earth person and well respected by the people, he had actively involved in numerous ways in uplifting the society,” stated the note issued by MIP, NSCN (IM).

It further said that when the Nagas were in the “most difficult time and at the darkest period of Human Rights violation marked by tortures and killings,” Ahu was the first person to file the petition in Supreme Court of India against the imposition of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) and demanded for withdrawal of draconian laws. He worked selflessly for the Nagas in particular and the North East people in general against the human rights violation, NSCN (IM) added.

“The Nagas have lost a true leader. The Nation shall at all times bear in mind his incalculable service.”

The note conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that God bless consolations in time of their mourning.
