NSCN (K), Myanmar army urged to exercise restraint

DIMAPUR, MAY 18 (MExN): The Eastern Konyak Union (Myanmar) on Saturday made fervent appeal to the NSCN (K) and the Myanmar Army to restrain from carrying out armed conflict in civilian populated areas.
A press release received from the Eastern Konyak Union alleged that Myanmar army has been inflicting untold miseries every year to the local populace in the villages by burning down houses, killing domestic animals, harassing people, damaging properties and lobbing explosives inside houses while accusing the villagers of supporting the NSCN (K).

Of the latest instance, the Union reported that the Myanmar army numbering around 200 soldiers carrying highly sophisticated weapons travelled by foot from Laonyu village and started exchanging heavy fire with the NSCN (K) on May 16 from 1-6pm in the forest between Pesao and Chen Hoyat village. On May 17, the firing continued from 9-10 am.

The Union stated that the firing and bombing which has been continuing for days has put the villagers of Chen Hoyat in tension and danger since they cannot move out from the village even to bring basic necessities. It stated that on the eastern front, the Myanmar army continue to open fire while on the Western part, the Indian army has imposed curfew- wedging them in between.

The Union has therefore urged the NSCN (K), Myanmar and Indian Army to exercise restraint and stop armed conflict in civilian populated areas.
