NU hosts farmers’ seminar-cum-training prog

Lumami, March 30 (MExN): A farmers’ seminar-cum-training programme on ‘potentials of organic farming of spices for doubling farmers’ income’ was held in Nagaland University’s headquarter Lumami on March 29 and 30. Both the inaugural and valedictory programmes were held in I. Ihoshe Kinimi Hall.

A press release issued by Peter Ki PRO NU Lumami stated that the inaugural programme was chaired by Prof. SK Chaturvedi, HoD, Department of Botany, NU. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Kundan, SMS (Agricultural Extension), KVK, NU. A special speech was delivered by Dr. Abemo, Registrar, NU. 

The chief guest of the programme, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, Vice-Chancellor, Nagaland University, in his speech emphasized on the potential of spices grown in the area for the livelihood generation for the farming community.

Altogether about 200 farmers from the eight villages of Lumami, Zaphumi, Alaphumi, Sema Settsü, Litta New, Phisumi, Izheto, and Ajiqami, participated in the seminar-cum-training programme. Among others, the training focused on marketing strategies of organic produce of spices, and organic cultivation of ginger and turmeric. At the valedictory programme, the chief guest Prof. MK Sinha, Finance Officer, Nagaland University said that the government needs to be proactive in ensuring that organic products are transferred from the producer to the user, so that the farming communities are benefitted.

The seminar-cum-training programme was organised by KVK, NU, and sponsored by the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India.
