NWHD strengthens anti tobacco campaign in Dimapur

Dimapur, September 5 (MExN): Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) in support of anti tobacco campaign led by the Chief Medical Officer has urged all colonies and ward women leaders to strongly support ban on all forms of chewable tobacco in Dimapur district. NWHD Information & Publicity Secretary, Thethem Hangsingh in a press release while seeking the cooperation of GBs and Dimapur Urban Colony Chairman Federation to support the Supreme Court Order of September 23, 2016 said that such element harmful to health must be eradicated from society especially from school areas. The anti tobacco campaign in Dimapur district by Naga Women Hoho is to “safeguard our children as insensitivity on the part of our society at large has put the lives of the young generation into precarious situation,” it said. NWHD further stated that sale of tobacco products is banned within 100 metres from educational institutions, but many shops continue to sell these products with impunity and hundreds of students are getting into tobacco habit every day. The state government has already banned gutkha (mixture of pan masala and tobacco) in the state but to evade this, pan masala and tobacco sachets are now sold together in separate packets, it added. To remove this loophole and also to comply with the Supreme Court order, it said, the government has issued a fresh order banning all twin packs conjoined or packed separately in Nagaland but the local tobacco traders are trying to sabotage it. Therefore, the Dimapur Naga Women Hoho has appealed to the “leaders not to sabotage anti tobacco campaign in Dimapur with any other source of influence.”
