Organization for Consumer Rights Awareness launched

Organization for Consumer Rights Awareness (OCRA) - a full-fledged consumer rights concerned body under Government of Nagaland was officially launched at PVC Hall, Phesama Village under Kohima district on February 16. 

Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection (LMCP), Government of Nagaland Addl. Controller & HoD Beizo M Kuotsu in his speech stated that the value and substance for consumer rights was mostly realized only during the last few years over more than 30 years of law governing concerns of the customer. 

“Efforts then broadened in spheres of forming organizations and welfare bodies, organizing programmes for spreading awareness and educating consumers and checking anomalies, Kuotsu added. 

Adding that the inception of such a welfare group not only look towards empowering the voice of individuals to fight for consumerism, he also pointed that it has the responsibility of spearheading in acting as a vigilant body for ensuring completion of development activities or any other welfare activities. 

He also articulated that consumers protection extends to the goods and services we buy every day. “Consumers are legally entitled to a refund, repair, replacement or repeat service if there is a problem with any goods or services they buy,” he said.
Pointing that Nagas are complacent and modest on our approach to rights, the HoD called the members present to be assertive against anomalies and corruption. 

Vipu Zashümo who delivered the keynote address underlined the objective of the organization and mentioned that it aims to fulfill the dynamic needs of consumerism by checking the onslaught on consumers and seek redressal against unfair practices. 

The programme was chaired by Ketholeto Zashümo and Zhawheto Tacü pronounced the invocation. 

A handout on Consumer Protection Act 1986 and Protection rules 1987 was also distributed during the launching programme.
