Wokha, March 27 (MExN): Peace Channel Wokha chapter organized one day inter school seminar on peer mediation as a tool to peace building at Don Bosco Youth Centre Wokha on March 25.
Speaking on the occasion as resource person to over one hundred and forty six students from seven different schools of Wokha town, Janthuiyang RK John, Project Coordinator Peace Channel said, “Peer mediation is problem solving technique within the circle of friends. It is a process by which two or more persons involved in a dispute meet in a private, safe and confidential setting to work out problems focusing primarily upon the needs, rights and interest and is party centered.”
He also stated that the role of peer mediation as a whole is to help students to solve problems on their own. Students encountered different problems in their daily lives starting from among their siblings to teachers and peers in the schools. Thus, knowing the steps and techniques of peer mediation will enhance their relationship, studies and social live he added. He further shared some of the benefits of peer mediation, he added.
The speaker also stated that it will effectively solves students conflict for good, by practicing peer mediation students will improve their life skills like effective communication, conflict resolution skills, increase their self esteemed and give greater insight through participation.
In the later part of the session, role play was conducted among the participants on how they can put their learning into practice.
