Phom apex bodies urge govt to expedite electoral roll revision

Dimapur, December 13 (MExN): The Phom tribal apex bodies have requested the Government of Nagaland to expedite the conduct of electoral roll revision under 49 A/C Tamlu and 50 A/C under Longleng district. It also urged the government to immediately post the Assistant Election Officer to Longleng as the post has been lying vacant for a long time.
In a letter adressed to the Chief Electoral Officer and Home Commissioner Nagaland, representatives of the Phom Peoples’ Council and Phom Students’ Union stated the all Phom tribal apex bodies and political parties had unanimously suggested for early conduct of intensive revision of electoral roll for wiping out of bogus, expired, shifted, underage electors during meetings held on November 30 and December 7, 2011 at Longleng. It also mentioned that the meeting discussed ways to bring down the percentage of electors vis-à-vis census population 2011 to a reasonable ratio/proportion.
However, the apex bodies stated since the present figure of electoral roll is the result of inclusions made during the successive ‘summary revisions’ over the years, any attempt to rationalize the present electoral roll through random deletion of such a huge number of electors in one go may be almost impossible practically. And any such exercise, if carried out randomly, will create chains of problem, the organisations stated.
In this regard, the organisations fell that the underlying problems can be rightly addressed only if intensive revision of electoral roll is conducted, if not, rationalization may be done on phase manner to avoid any problems and complications.
