The Nagaland state government has finally severed official ties with MKR Pillai, who was consultant to the Nagaland Police. A state Home Department official informed on August 4 that the “termination order” was issued on July 31.
While the order has been issued, it appears the Nagaland Police Headquarters is unaware of the Home department issuing the order. DGP LL Doungel when contacted on August 3 about the termination order replied that he was not aware of the Home department issuing the order. He though added that the Home department must have issued it since the PHQ had decided to terminate the contract earlier in June.
The PHQ had decided on June 14 to terminate Pillai’s consultancy contract with immediate effect subsequent to a series of raids conducted by the Income Tax during which huge wealth alleged to be linked to Pillai’s business conglomerate was uncovered.
The DGP had told the media on June 14 that the PHQ decision will be conveyed to the government and the government will issue the order.
The Home department official when asked whether the order has been relayed to the PHQ replied that it must have reached the PHQ.
Meanwhile, the investigation launched by the State Vigilance Commission was stated to be going ahead. A suo moto case was registered at the Vigilance Police Station, Kohima on June 12 to investigate the nature and circumstances of the appointment.
The investigation was initially held up with the Commission facing difficulty obtaining access to documents related to Pillai’s appointment as consultant to the Nagaland Police from the Home Department.
A Vigilance official said on August 3 that the investigation was making steady progress as the Commission has got access to some files. The official added that no timeframe can be given with regard to duration of the investigation and at this stage “too early to divulge any details.”
