The need for up-gradation of Government Middle School (GMS) Midland, Kohima, to that of high school was conveyed to the concerned authority during the golden jubilee celebration of the school last week.

GMS Midland head teacher Tiamenla Longchar said the need for school up-radation has been conveyed last year also but the matter is yet to materialize.

She requested RMSA state mission director, Limawabang Aier, who was present at the golden jubilee celebration as the chief guest, to consider the matter at the earliest.

During the golden jubilee celebration, Aier informed that they would look into the colony panchayat proposal for up-gradation of the school, as it is genuine depending on the location of the school in the heart of the state capital Kohima.

“The elders of the colony (Midland) felt the need of a school and approached the government to open a school to provide education especially to the colony children. Thus, in 1967, the opening of a Lower Primary school was approved at the colony. Recognizing the need of an educational institute for the benefit of the colony children, Late Raneilie Belho and family willingly donated the present site of the school for which we are ever grateful,” penned Longchar in a souvenir.

She stated that the school started functioning with a handful of students and teachers. In 1969, the enrolment of the students was 120 with Classes A to 2. It was upgraded to Class 4 in 1990 and to Class 5 in 2009.

Gradually the school was upgraded to a full-fledged elementary school up to Class 8 in 2010 till date. Late Ahenuo was the first teacher-in-charge of the school.

“The school started with only a few teachers but now the number has increased to 18 teachers including 2 carpentry teachers, 1 drawing teacher and 1 physical education teacher,” she stated   The school was communitised in 2003 and Ward Education Committee was formed with Visieho Neikha as the first chairman.

“The school enrolment is increasing year by year and at present is stands at 251,” she stated adding that due to communitization, the school provides free text books, uniforms and mid-day meal to all the students which is an encouragement for them to pursue education with minimum drop-outs.

“I am pleased and proud to mention that the Government Middle School Midland has produced a number of officers and responsible quality leaders all these times,” penned Visa Meru, chairman Midland Panchayat.

Zaseta (Atanu) Theyo, chairman school management committee, GMS Midland also penned that the school found in 1967 has done a yeomen service to the society by taking under its wing a large number of students from underprivileged and needy family and guided them into society as good citizens.
