PM Modi promises help to flood-hit Assam

  NEW DELHI, AUGUST 14 (PTI): With the flood situation in Assam deteriorating, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal on Monday for the second time in as many days and said all possible support is being provided to the state.   The Prime Minister said the central government has been closely and constantly monitoring the flood situation in Assam.   "PM @narendramodi spoke to Assam CM @sarbanandsonwal yesterday & today regarding the flood situation in the state," the PMO tweeted.   "All possible support is being provided to Assam for overcoming the flood situation prevailing in parts of the state," Modi said.   The Army has been called out for rescue operations in the state.   Sonowal on Monday informed the Prime Minister about the devastation caused by the flood in middle and upper Assam and the disruption to vehicular movement on National Highway 37, the lifeline between the two areas, a state government spokesman had said yesterday.   Principal secretary to the Prime Minister, Nripendra Mishra, has asked Assam chief secretary V K Pipersenia to submit a report detailing the damage and devastation caused by the current wave of floods in the state.   Train services to Northeast stopped due to flood Train services to the Northeast from the rest of the country have been stopped till Wednesday in view of the flood in Assam, West Bengal and Bihar.   "The Railway Board has decided to cancel all incoming trains from various parts of the country towards NE Region, which were to reach either Katihar or Malda town till 10 am of August 16, 2017," Northeast Frontier Railway chief public relations officer (CPRO) Pranav Jyoti Sharma said in a statement.   "Heavy rainfall in the last 72 hours in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and other NE states has resulted in railway operations being severely hampered as rain water has affected railway tracks at several places in Katihar and Alipurduar Division of NF Railway," Sharma said.   In view of the flood situation, 11 outgoing trains have been cancelled by NF Railway today, Sharma said, adding four other trains have been short-terminated at various locations, he added.   Yesterday, 22 trains were cancelled, while 14 others were stopped at various places as tracks were flooded.   "While many rivers in Alipurduar and Katihar divisions are in spate, NF Railway authorities are keeping a close watch and continuously monitoring the situation of nearby railway bridges and tracks, taking all precautionary measures for safe train running," the CPRO said.   Situation remains grim in Arunachal Flood situation in Arunachal Pradesh continued to remain grim as surface communication has been disrupted in various parts of the state.   Majority portion of Anjaw, East Siang and Namsai districts were affected by flood while Papum Pare, East Kameng and West Siang were partly hit.   Remote Anjaw district has been cut off from the rest of the state for seven days as the main road to the district from Lohit remained blocked at several places following landslides triggered by incessant rains, an official report said here.   Intra-district road communications were also badly hit.   Hawai, Hayuliang and Chaglongam Circle in the district were cut off from the rest of the district for the past three or four days, the report said.   Though efforts were on clear the roads, recurring landslides were hampering restoration work.   Meanwhile, food crisis looms large in the district bordering China and Deputy Commissioner Mamata Riba requested the state government for facilitating air dropping of food packets if the road remains blocked for another two days.   The district administration has directed the PWD and other departments to pull in resources for quick restoration of roads.   An East Siang district report said that a sudden change in course of Silluk river has cause inundation in Silluk village damaging paddy fields and roads.   At least nine houses were damaged due to erosion of Noa-Dehing river in Namsai district in the second wave of monsoon flood, though officials said the situation is improving.
