Pol parties corner each other ahead of Manipur by-poll

Imphal, February 5 (NNN): "By supporting the Independent candidate in the forthcoming by-election, the Manipur units of Janata Dal-Untied (JD-U) and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) are not fighting to overthrow the Congress (INC) but are obliquely supporting it", said the president of Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress (MPTC), Kim Gangte today in a political slug-fest just 10 days ahead of the polls.
If JD-U and CPI-M can not perform better job in soothing the suffering of the people of the State, they had better keep quite rather than criticizing others who are attempting at doing something worthwhile for the people of Manipur, she disparaged.
Gangte’s outburst today came as a counterattack to CPI-M’s Shanta’s statement yesterday who lashed out at Trinamool Congress saying “the party has been formed by a bunch of rejected persons in Manipur.”
K Sarat, a Trinamool Congress candidate, who was also at the public meeting said that the controversial power sub station under NEEPCO on a 25 acres land overlapping both Konthoujam and Patsoi Assembly Constituencies is a bane for the people of the area against which a massive peoples’ uprising had followed, and the fact that the Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly, Lokeshor, only yesterday tried to cover for the then Speaker Budhichandra and blaming an Independent MLA of Patsoi Assembly Constituency, S Keba, is grossly untrue.
Blaming the then Congress MLA and Speaker of the Assembly, Budhichandra, whose untimely demise has necessitated the conduct of the upcoming by-election to the 18-Konthoujam Assembly Constituency on February 14 next, he said that, “it is very unfortunate that he (Budhichandra) had not been aware of what was happening in his constituency.”
In order to win back the constituency, the cabinet ministers are trying to mislead the people of the area, he said, adding that this time the people of Konthoujam will teach the Ibobi Singh led Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government that money power has outlived its authority on the people who has been cheated and fooled all this while.
During the period of Budhichandra, PDS, APL, AYS, BPL, local area development funds etc. were all misused by the MLA with only less than 1/3 of the funds reaching to the intended beneficiaries, he alleged.
“He had sanctioned and withdrawn funds for the construction of crematorium for his home polling station twice over, ironically he himself was cremated on the river bank,” he said.
JD-U and CPI-M, who have extended support to the Independent candidate K Ranjit are a non-entity as far as Konthoujam is concerned, said Sarat. And as far as Ranjit is concerned, his family has a history of extending support to the Congress and that he going it alone because he could not obtain ticket from the Congress, he said.
