Imphal | October 2

Manipur police have started mopping operations in Imphal, with police officers stating the exercise is part of security measures.

Some sources said that the operations are being conducted in connection with the issue of "illegal immigrants". However, the police did not directly mention the issue of "illegal immigrants.”

Police were on regular mopping operations in the valley districts, particularly in the twin capital districts of Imphal. However, it remained suspended in the past few months.

Even as police officers involved in the operations disclosed that the operations are being launched as a part of security measure, the fresh operations are being launched coinciding with a recent announcement by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS).

A few days ago, the JCILPS announced fresh drive against "illegal immigrants" in the state from October 2.

While announcing checking of entry of "illegal immigrants" into the state through the national highways, new convenor of JCILPS, Kh Dhiren said drives will also be carried out to verify "non-locals" in different parts of the state.

Coinciding with the JCILPS’s announcement, police conducted mopping operations at various areas on Wednesday.

In one of the operations in Imphal’s Alu Gali, the police picked up around 16 non-locals possessing no documents to establish their identities.

A team of Imphal West district police conducted the mopping operations at Alu Gali and its surrounding areas of Thangal Bazar in the afternoon. Similar operations were conducted by a team of Imphal East district police at a Mahabali locality in Palace Compound on Wednesday morning.
